Proposed: Congress authorize a binding plebiscite for the residents of Puerto Rico to determine their own future regarding statehood

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -

FRED COSTELLO: IT’S PAST TIME FOR CONGRESS TO
AUTHORIZE A VOTE ON STATEHOOD
FOR THE RESIDENTS OF PUERTO RICO

“America is not about where you’re from, it’s about what you strive to become.”

Fred Costello, a Republican candidate for Congress in Florida’s 6th District, is
proposing Congress authorize a binding plebiscite for the residents of Puerto Rico to
determine their own future regarding statehood.

Costello said: “America is not about where you’re from, it’s about what you strive
to become.”

“This is a matter of fundamental fairness as we approach the 242nd anniversary of
America’s Declaration of Independence from colonial rule. The residents of Puerto Rico
deserve the same full rights of American citizenship enjoyed by more than 326 million
fellow Americans living in our fifty states,” Costello added.

American troops first raised Old Glory claiming the former Spanish colony on October
18, 1898. Nearly two decades later, President Woodrow Wilson signed the JonesShafroth
Act, granting Puerto Ricans U.S. citizenship in 1917. Many Puerto Rican
soldiers have fought for our country and have made the ultimate sacrifice for our
freedom.

But more than a century later, more than 3 million residents of the Commonwealth
Territory are still denied a full voice in our political system. Although they are American
citizens, they cannot elect members of Congress or vote for the President of the United
States while residing on the island.

Costello said: “The residents of Puerto Rico deserve the right to determine their own
destiny. After more than a century as a territory of the United States and more than 500
years under colonial rule, it’s time for Congress to stop treating our Puerto Rican
neighbors like second class citizens. Let Puerto Rico vote on statehood.”

Fred stands 4 US. That means all of us. “This is not about political parties or the
calculus of winning elections,” he said. “It’s about equal rights for all Americans.”

GREAT! Also—- IN SUMSUPPORT EQUAL RIGHTS; stop Federal discrimination against Puerto Ricans; END Puerto Rico’s Federal undemocratic Territorial Status; promptly resolve, along with PR’s Territorial Government, PR’s “Economic-Job; Fiscal-Debt; Infrastructure; Humanitarian; Status-Equality CRISIS” (where each part affects the other; the Federal undemocratic Territorial Status affects everything)! This is not only a Group Vote on the Status question, but, essentially a morale one for EQUALITY! Enough with Politicians/Others not talking about it or providing excuses; speculations, generalizations, and Political distortion that support Federal discrimination!
FACTS are: There are over 9 million Puerto Ricans-fellow US Citizens-American Veterans (2d largest Hispanic Group in our US)—about 5.6m in the States; 3.5 million reside in the Federal undemocratic US Territory of Puerto Rico-have a 2d Class US Citizenship-
    • Because, they don’t have Equal Rights (can’t vote for their US President; no just representation in Congress; nor federal “consent of the governed”; no Parity in Federal Laws-Programs; nor a permanent statuary US Citizenship…); no full blood earned benefits… that other US Citizens have! PR is a captive Market with hands tied…; can’t compete fairly on a level playing field! Yet Puerto Ricans make great contributions to our US!
    • US Congress, under the Territorial Clause, and per Insular Cases (1901-1925+)-controls the currency, border, economy, defense, foreign relations…can dispose of PR. Plus, imposes other un-fair burdens; hidden Taxes…
SOLVE: The Federal Government- must, with the Territorial Government, concurrently fix CRISIS roots—ensure EQUAL RIGHTS; END PR’s Federal undemocratic Territorial Status, admit to our “Union of States”-STATEHOOD (with own State Identity, Constitution, Flag, Sovereignty…) or alternatively conduct a Plebiscite between constitutional non-territorial Options: Statehood vs Independence!
DR. ML King said-THE TIME IS NOW! UNITED with Truth, Reason, Courage, and Civic Action-WE will Overcome! Millions want-EQUALITY+JUSTICE+PROGRESS=STATEHOOD with DIGNITY!
US Puerto Ricans-American Veterans fight for Equal Rights!
